With the 2018 Cowes-Torquay-Cowes fast approaching, it’s interesting to read a report of this famous race from ‘Yesteryear’. The 1975 Embassy Daily Express CTC race was one of the most exciting marathons in the history of the event and attracted a healthy entry with a strong international flavour. In contrast, it appears the 2018 will feature just three ‘overseas’ entries – the regular RIB from Belgium ‘Biretta Due’ joins Mikko Oikari’s ‘Going Lean’, a 52 foot Outerlimits powered by four FTP. The 2400hp should be enough to win the race overall but four motors present four lots of problems. Ole Flintoff’s ‘Apache Warpath’ won the Poole Bay 100 this year and is powered by two Ilmors, while Markus Hendricks runs under the German flag although the boat is based in the UK.
