It is almost 33 years ago to the day that Fowey in Cornwall hosted an offshore powerboat race for the British and UKOBA Championships. It attracted a huge entry, not only in terms of entry list but also the size of competing boats. The challenge of manipulating 40 footers, like the Shead designed monohull ‘Double Two Shirts’ down the notoriously narrow Cornish lanes was a masterpiece in driving. Sadly Fowey has not figured in British powerboat race calendars since, but Falmouth is flying the Cornish flag this term so the county is still well represented.
This is a copy of the Fowey race report written by Peter Bloomfield and published in the Powerboat and Waterskiing magazine.
