Excitement is growing a new XCAT World Championship is approaching, and with the UIM, the World Powerboating Federation, in the role of promoter, 2018 promises even more boats and more venues.
The first race of the X-Cat season will be held in Fujairah, United Arab Emirates on April 12th and 13th, and new builders, new teams, new venues will make for another amazing championship. Whilst many details have yet to be disclosed, this season’s line-up should count no less than 14 teams from three continents, with the usual presence of drivers from all over the world. And, for the first time ever, there will be no less than four boat builders competing with different teams. Beside the Victory-built catamarans, 2018 will see boats by Doug Wright, MTI-Randy Scism, and Maritimo.
As for the hosting venues, so far 12 races have been officially announced in a calendar that will span from April to November touching 6 different locations, across China and the UAE, whilst further venues in Europe have still to be confirmed.
Fujairah International Marine Club, a venue that has always seen spectacular and challenging races, with rough sea and many twists, will kick off the season with a four day event held over four days from April 10 to 13 when the two full-length races, both with championship points at stake, will take place on the last two days.
The defending champions are Salem al Adidi and Eisa al Ali, who won the 2017 crown with Victory Team of Dubai after a head-to-head battle with Brett Luhrmann and Pål Virik Nilsen of Team Australia. All the four drivers will be at the starting flag, as will be most of the competitive pilots seen last year. But we can expect to see new teams and new drivers in Fujairah to fight for the title of the most spectacular powerboating disciplines of the last few years.
