Although it’s not yet official, we have heard from a UIM spokesperson that a three race World Class 1 championship is in the pipeline with one race to be staged in Bermuda, a second race in Florida and it has not yet been decided where the third race will be held. The general idea is to get the Americans involved which will improve the numbers racing in this class which has struggled in Europe to maintain sufficient entries.
Whilst it must be stressed that the 2018 UIM World Class 1 Championship is still in the planning stages, if this project takes off, there is every chance the series will see 10 times world champion Steve Curtis back on the UIM circuit as since Qatar withdrew their boats from the Class 1 series Steve has been competing in the US. He has joined the OPA championship series along with partner Gary Stray in the ex. Spirit of Qatar cat, now painted bright yellow as it has been chartered by Geico after their original boat was badly damaged in an accident in St. Clair in which Keith Holmes was tragically killed.
