Last year we witnessed many changes on the international stage of offshore powerboat racing and now we may see that trend continue into 2019 in the USA Offshore scene.
Over the years, new promoters have arrived on the US offshore scene promising an alternative race series to Super Boat International with large fields and many classes participating, but after maybe three seasons, their efforts have tended to fizzle out. More often than not, its because there are just not enough teams to promote two superboat championships. However, through thick and thin, there has been one survivor… promotor John Carbonell and his wife Deane who have remained faithful to their Superboat International company (SBI).
John has over the years managed to present a respectable domestic offshore series featuring some seriously quick and expensive raceboats, and traditionally the SBI series draws the US offshore scene to a close each year with the infamous Key West ‘World Championship’. This event is always referred to as ‘The Worlds’, but in reality it is made up of mostly American teams with the odd overseas entry in their midst.
However, it appears Carbonell’s reign could be coming to an end as Key West resident and promoter of Rock World Offshore Larry Bleil is bidding to take over Carbonell’s empire, and he has made it clear, “I will take over SBI come hell or high water.” It will be fascinating to see how this situation resolves as we are sure Mr Carbonell will not give up his promotion without a fight.
