The Classic Offshore Powerrboat Club staged a special tribute weekend on 19/20th August to one of offshore’s legendary designers, Renato ‘Sonny’ Levi. The Italian has been responsible for many famous names in offshore racing and several of them arrived at Yarmouth, Isle of Wight for this get-together. The weekend was pronounced a resounding success as Levi designed craft were joined by many non-Levi creations. Possibly the most famous of all was, regrettably an absentee from the party as ‘Surfury’ (pictured) is in storage in a warehouse in Swindon, Wiltshire and its future remains a mystery. The other Levi craft that, like Surfury holds a special place in offshore enthusiasts hearts, is A’Speralda, and it too was missing as it is undergoing a major refit. What is so special about these two craft is that they have both won the Cowes-Torquay-Cowes marathon. Ironically the Race Director of this event is Martin Levi, Sonny’s son.
The COPC are to be congratulated on organising the tribute as it was so weather reliant. However, blue skies, sunshine and choppy seas made the event a truly memorable occasion and the owners and crews of the fleet that arrived at Yarmouth were rewarded with a great weekend, and hopefully these craft will make a few more appearances before the season is over.
