Invariably the West Bay race circuit is run in particularly rough conditions which takes its toll on race boats, but 2018 was completely different and with calm waters drivers were pushing harder than usual.

The World Cup football match featuring England on Sunday did not distract Hundreds of spectators and sun-worshipers lining the piers, promenade and beaches at the picturesque seaside village of West Bay, Dorset. Twenty five boats took to the water and the course was very spectator orientated with the action staged in full view of the promenade and beach with commentator Peter Butler keeping the crowds entertained and informed on the activity.
The weekend programme was made up of four races, two on Saturday and two on Sunday and the field was divided into three classes (there were no Class 1 boats). Class 4 (the smallest class) was won by Nathan Scott’s Calypso with two wins ahead of husband and wife team Sharon and Ian Atlee aboard Tintorera Racing. Torquay team, Tim Spink & Claire Williams in Multispark Racing, collected Saturday’s honours with Jeremy Gibson & Paul Scott in Fair Play taking the runner-up berth in both of Saturday’s races.

Despite the calm conditions there were two collisions occurred on Saturday that required the race to be red flagged whilst boats were towed back to the recovery area. So with two boats down for Sunday’s racing once again Spink’s Multispark Racing, Gibson’s Fair Play and Foa’s Cafe Racer were battling with each other for Class 2 victory, but on lap six the red flags were raised when Lethal Viking Infant flipped over tossing its occupants of Joshua Lindsay and Dan Mott into the bay. Both crew were plucked from the water unhurt and Lethal Viking which had been loaned to Lindsay for the West Bay race by fellow racer Paul Scott, was towed ashore to fight another day. Once the green flag was raised and action re-commenced until the red flag was raised again on the final lap of race four after the tragic accident of Kevin Edmundson in the Class 3 boat ‘YKnot’.
The fourth round of the OCRDA Championship takes place in Howth, Southern Ireland on 13th and 15 July.
