Australian veteran F1 pilot Kay Marshall, was seriously injured while competing in the Singha Formula event in Thailand. The Grandmother of two girls, was leading the race when her steering broke and she crashed heavily. Rescue was on hand quickly and Kay was extradited from the cockpit unconscious and taken to the excellent Samitivej Hospital where doctors diagnosed the seriousness of her injuries.
As I write this, an operation is in progress to insert eight screws into her spine, and it is imperative that infection from the murky waters of the river is avoided. When the doctors deem it is OK for her to travel home to Australia, she will have to lay flat on her back to ensure her spine is stable.
Kay’s racing career has been mainly family funded, but in this case she has no insurance to cover an accident of this magnitude. Racing friends are donating generously to pay for her treatment, including Gwyn Jones, wife of Jonathan. Gwyn has donated the proceeds of a Christmas Faye that she organised in her home town of Cardigan, Wales, to Kay Marshall’s medical costs and travel.
