While the CTC heavyweights were battling through the challenging elements of Bournemouth Bay, a variety of Class 3 and offshore race boats that could not carry enough fuel for the long haul, were enjoying comparatively calmer conditions as they completed three laps of the Solent for the last race of the 2018 UKOBRA Championship.

Not surprisingly, Frank Rose and Vee Gangjavian aboard the Buzzi designed ‘Vintage Torque’ (above) led the way and claimed maximum points ahead of the vintage aluminium Class 3 mono ‘Jupiter’ and another golden oldie ‘Warlord’.
Although there were several retirements, Kerry Bobin’s Twister cat was the only casualty when it flipped over, although the crew and boat escaped any serious damage. ‘Mr Noisy’, in what is believed to be its last outing in the hands of long time owner Alan Goodwin, retired within spitting distance of the chequered flag when it ran out of fuel.
Although it was billed as the Cowes-Poole-Cowes race, the OOD decided not to send the fleet into the exposed waters of Bournemouth Bay so the Poole leg of the race was cancelled.
