It is with great sadness that we learn of the death of Charles Burnett in a helicopter crash in New Mexico. Charles was without a shadow of doubt, one of Britain’s most colourful offshore exponents winning offshore races and setting world speed records.
Charles interests varied from vintage cars, aeroplanes, vintage tanks and one of his pride and joys was his country estate in Hampshire’s New Forest. His parties on the estate were legendary although his neighbours in this part of tranquil Hampshire would not agree. Another interest he enjoyed that was rather unusual was his passion for steam power and a group of enthusiasts headed by Charles set a world land speed for a steam powered vehicle. Who could forget his exhaustive efforts to get a steam powered Mercury outboard on a 2 litre catamaran. His company Vulture Ventures was based on the Hamble and was managed by long time friend and partner Mark Pascoe in his many record breaking achievements
The world of powerboats will mourn the loss of this great character RIP Charles
